5 Dog Grooming Tips for New Pet Owners

So, how do you care for your furry friend? And how can you make grooming easier for your dog?

Starting a life with a dog is a passion and an adventure! But before you adopt, it’s important to know all the responsibilities that come with having one. The undercoat thickens during the fall and winter months, as it serves as an extra insulator for them. This includes the act of grooming.

Keep reading our dog grooming tips to learn how to care for your new fur baby.

1. Brush Their Coat Daily

As a pet owner, start by gently brushing the coat to remove any tangles and mats. If you find any mats, use a dog comb or de-matting tool to brush out the mats.

Work slowly to keep your dog comfortable and relaxed. When brushing, take the time to check for any bumps, lumps, or anything that might seem out of the ordinary.

2. Clean Their Ears Once a Week

First, check your pet’s ears for any signs of discharge, flaky skin, inflammation, or ticks. If any signs of discomfort are present, contact your vet immediately. Then, fill an ear cleaner with a solution made specifically for cats or fluffy dogs and soak a cotton ball in the solution.

Gently rub the solution inside their ear, including around the ear flap, and then place the cotton ball on the end of your finger and massage it around the base of the ear. Finally, use dry cotton balls to dry the inside of their ear until the area is dry.

3. Trim Their Nails

First, you will need a nail clipper, either the guillotine style or the scissor-styled clipper. Make sure to use the type and size appropriate for your dog’s size and nail thickness.

When trimming, take off small bits at a time, being sure to avoid any splitting or cracking. Finally, reward your dog for a job well done, either with a treat or a special message.

4. Determine Their Type of Coat

First, take close note of the pet’s physical coat. Coats can be smooth, double, wire, long, curly, and wavy. Smooth coats are the shortest type of coat and are often glossy.

Double coats are comprised of a soft undercoat and a coarser, sometimes longer outer coat. If the pet has a wire coat, the coat will often be wiry, sometimes wavy, and often colored in shades of yellowish red.

5. Avoid Dog Shedding

First, brush your pup regularly with a slicker brush or a rubber grooming glove; make sure to get deep into its fur and reach the undercoat. Second, feed your pet a quality diet with plenty of fatty acids and limit their stress.

Additionally, keep them hydrated and provide adequate shelter when it’s cold or rainy. Finally, regular baths with specially formulated dog shampoo help restrict shedding as it moisturizes their fur and skin. Look here for more information on how you can reduce this problem.
